Happy 5th birthday, RadixLog

permanent link

RadixLog has become 5 years old today. To honor this anniversary and to reduce the backlog somewhat I plan to come out with at least a couple of posts in these coming days.

Caching up with blogging

permanent link

It has been rather quiet here on RadixLog. Of course this is not a sign of lack of activity on the Hungarian genealogy scene - holidays and preparation of new stuff are to blame. There are a couple of items in the RadixLog buffer that beg for release. These include both tasty family history novelties and chunks that have been collecting dust for months (or even years, ouch). Let's get started and see how far we can get. Happy 2008 to every ancestry hunter reading!

'Twas the June of 2004...

... when the last substantial amount of blog items was added. One year ago! Time to wake up and take care of this orphaned little corner of the web.

Your fearless blogger was not without work these months. I had the chance to take part in the digital library building efforts of my employer, the Univ of Pécscs Lib this last Autumn (and have been having a less exciting assignment since Jan 2005). As our digital collection, KlimoTheca has several items "made for genealogists", and that besides the very recent discoveries made by Hungarian SIG of Jewishgen list members there seems to be a lack of publicity of it in non-Hungarian speaking family history circles, I'd take the plunge to introduce it to blog readers.

Speaking Radixwise, I can say that once I can get the new searching interface ready, together with some major(?) and minor improvements, I'd be able to throw in 500,000 more records by September or October 2005.

Not closely tied to genealogy, yet a new site of mine was launched a few days ago: ToPoIndex. This utility gives the visitors an index to old topographical postcards showing places of historical Hungary.

I did not have the chance to read Hungarian mailing lists closely these months, and there might be some other news I'm missing out there on other websites, too. These coming days, as time permits, I'd like to ste up in this matter, too, and catch the interesting things.

RadixLog is back

permanent link

I'm back to revitalize this almost abandoned corner of the web.

During the past days I gave the software handling the blog a tweak. The look has some changes (Atom feed now available) and added a subject index to improve navigation around the site. There are some more items on the techie agenda, hope to settle them in a few days. Hope readers like the developments.

Besides the design the blog needs content, too, I guess. I feel like owing the readers almost the whole second part of 2004, contentwise. Probably there will be retro entries added in these next coming days, and I'll have the chance to continue with more current things.

RadixLog is 15 months old today.

August's almost passed - no blogging here

permanent link

Well, well... this entry is just to remind myself that this poor little bloggy was left without any additions. I took a few days for vacation with the family this month, had to show up at my dayjob employer, the library several occasions due to our digitization efforts (to be mentioned later here) and was planning my new genealogy research thingie, a surname metasearch utility to be released in a few weeks. And. Was adding records to the upcoming RadixIndex update that would celebrate the millionth added record, too.

And finally...

permanent link

I'm back to the log file and will take a re-start.

Blogging was stopped in mid-March. I've been having really demanding duties at my day job. Hope to finish them in a few days and will jump into genealoging.

A pretty long row of items to be included in the blog has accumulated.

So, going somewhat retrospective...

Blogging should be resumed here - soon ;)

OK, not much activity here for some months now. I've got a few good "news" items to be forwarded, so, watch these pages this week.

Dick Eastman on blogs

permanent link

An article in the recent issue (14 June) of Dick Eastman's Online Genealogy Newsletter covers blogs. Besides the general idea of blogging he has a collection of blogs that relate to genealogy. Would you believe? RadixLog is listed there, too.

An apropo of dealing with blogs is that Dick has started his own blog. Happy blogging! I, sure, added it to the blogs linked on the right side menu.

The archive copy of the newsletter issue should be here. (Not uploaded as of writing this entry.)

No post in April

permanent link

Well, well, April is almost gone and there's no new entry in the blog so far this month. Yeah, it's not like Genealogy Blog, where co-blogger Joe Edmon had in mid-April: "Iíll have a few posts tonight and will have more up tomorrow. We havenít missed a day of blogging in 5 1/2 months and donít want to break that record now."

OK, I'll gather my bookmarks from April an will have some blogging activities on Sat or on Sun.

Return of RadixLog

permanent link

These weeks were really busy for me. My day job was so much demanding that I could not afford to come to RadixLog and post something. I'm sorry for that. Now I'll try recap all the interesting things since early January 2004.

Back online and move on the way

permanent link

Oops, for a good part of yesterday (12 hours) sites on this server were unreachable. Sorry for the inconveniencies. We are back for good, and also, measures have been taken to move this site to a new server at a new hosting provider. I'm very excited now as we will get our own dedicated server this time. Hope to switch smoothly.

Hold back, another link found

permanent link

Reading back in Leland's blog I became interested in a log mentioned there: Rheinhessen Heimat- und Familienforschung im Rheinhessenarchiv - oops, a bit long title for the site. Noticed with interest that RadixLog is listed in the links section of the left menu.

RadixLog started

permanent link

Well. I've just started this blog to share Hungarian genealogy news that I come across/hear about etc.
A newsletter on the topic has been planned for years by me - just to realize that I won't have the time to make it really organized, well-written, regularly delivered and other things that would needed for a real "newsletter". Instead, interested parties will see eventual short entries here in the blog.
